Why we're building TravelUPI

I was back in Gurugram and wanted to buy something from a small seller. Partly because I needed it, mostly because I wanted to help them out.

I had no cash. Everyone around me was scanning a QR code. My UPI wouldn't work, because my NRI account was hard to fund and fixing it would take weeks.

So I walked away without buying it.

It was a small moment, but millions of NRIs and visitors hit the same wall every time they come to India.

It's time India's payments welcomed everyone who comes home.

How it will work

Step 1: Sign up at home

Verify once with your passport, before you fly.

Step 2: Top up from home

From your UK bank first, with the US and Canada to follow. Converted to rupees.

Step 3: Scan and pay

Any UPI QR code in India. The merchant sees a normal payment.

Techapto Foundation

The last mile of India's digital payments is the front door.

UPI is one of the world's great payment systems, built for residents. We research how NRIs and visitors pay in India, and work with communities, industry and policymakers to open it to everyone who comes home, or comes to visit.
